La «famosa invasione» dei piemontesi in Sicilia

Abstract

In questo saggio invece si cercherà di raccontare la storia dal punto di vista dei protagonisti dell’epoca . Si spiegherà che la Sicilia aveva vissuto una lunga fase di opposizione armata a Napoli durante la quale aveva costruito, nell’immaginario collettivo europeo, l’idea di isola rivoluzionaria. E questa immagine era figlia dell’opera dei suoi intellettuali, come Michele Amari, che furono sempre all’opposizione, prima come indipendentisti, poi come nazionalisti siciliani e infine come piemontesi e italiani. Non solo gli intellettuali erano quasi tutti antiborbonici, ma anche gran parte dell’aristocrazia, del clero e del ceto dei banchieri e commercianti. Alla fine si cercherà di tracciare un profilo dei Mille e dei picciotti che li seguirono, spiegando che erano quasi tutti giovani borghesi, studenti, commercianti, possidenti e artigiani. Concludendo con un’inversione della retorica dei apoti: non sono i piemontesi che hanno occupato la Sicilia, bensì il contrario, furono i siciliani a conquistare il Piemonte e l’Italia.
