so regularly in the NOTES booklist, and yet I fear these listings leave many readers in perplexity-partly because of the language difficulty, but partly also because the reader may be in no position to judge for himself which publications, out of the many listed, are the ones most important to the topic that interests him. I therefore hope that this attempt at a frankly selective bibliography with brief commentaries will prove useful. The bibliography is limited to Czech (not including Slovakian) literature about music from the years 1945-1958; those works available in foreignlanguage translations are not represented. As a matter of practical convenience, the bibliography as a whole has been subdivided into smaller and more easily surveyed subject categories, with numbers in the introductory commentaries referring to entries in the lists that follow. Publishing agencies have for the most part been indicated (some of them with the aid of the symbols given in the table on p. 540), but everyone should be reminded that all Czech publications can be secured only through the offices of Artia, Ve Sme6kaich 30, Prague 2.
