In this paper, we explore the notion of illegal appended enterprise, an illegal business activity attached to a legal host business by an independent entrepreneur. We focus upon the symbiotic relation between host and appendage with specific attention to the problems necessarily addressed by the successful illegal operator: legal pressure, rival entrepreneurs, customer control, and host attempts at limiting the operation. While the entrepreneur employs several mechanisms to master the sales environment, the key to success lies in the power and selfrestraint found in the illegal merchants' subculture. We illustrate the various aspects of illegal appended enterprises through detailed analysis of a prototype of such operations—selling the lines at bingo games.
