The creative vitality and character of South African theater owes more to traditions of folk performance than many contemporary political dramatists realize. Conceived as aesthetic values and processes rather than as static cultural forms, African performance traditions offer a wealth of expressive resources. Black popular theater is rooted in the historical transformation of these traditions, and they are indispensible to the development of a culturally integrated, broadly effective black political theater in South Africa.
