The Circus reenacts many of the persistent problems of ambivalence: terror and sadism, horror and masochism are activated, then immediately and magically dissolved. No mature relationship is dramatized, and the circus audience leaves the tent arena as childlike as it entered. This is appropriate for children, whose aim is mastery of external reality, in contrast to the grown-up, whose aim is mastery of internal reality.'
