SUMMARY The anatomical investigation of the genus Thurnia Hook.f. shows that although the monotypic family has many characters in common with several supposedly related families, it exhibits some unusual and perhaps unique features. Anatomical evidence suggests that the Thurniaceae should be kept separate from the Rapateaceae and Juncaceae, and that the family is probably only distantly related to those included in the Bromelineae or Juncineae.
