Environmental Management Systems (EMS) developed in response to dissatisfaction with environmental auditing as a means of preventing pollution. The EMS approach benefited from the influence of diverse fields such as law, accounting, quality management, and workplace health and safety. Although not yet a trend, the marriage of EMS with self-evaluation, self-improvement models could make EMS even more effective.
