Abstract In the last chapter we reviewed the accumulated research on international migration and economic development at the national level. We found that once the various direct and indirect effects are taken fully into account, international migration carries considerable potential for national economic development, but that this potential is often unrealized in practice. All too frequently, countries pin their hopes on labour export while ignoring more basic economic problems.
