The authors use the word, "regimen," meaning "regular pattern of action," but the patient who has had chest surgery may feel he is the victim of a dictatorial "regime," for his nurse must insist that he cough, turn, exercise, and get out of bed and walk, bottles and all, night and day. And despite preoperative teaching, many patients would rather lie still. But the nurse's understanding manner and wise use of analgesics can make her firm hand seem softer.
