Registries and Intergroup Relations

Registries and Intergroup Relations

Abstract

6(PRIVATE duty is my choice in nursing, and calls for private duty nurses are going unfilled. And still I can't get work through my district professional registry even though I am an ANA member." Letters of this kind are still coming to ANA from nurses on more than one registry list. This practice is, however, contrary to ANA policy and to the principles worked out by the ANA registry committee and accepted by ANA members. The first principle under which a nurses professional registry operates is that it "shall render service on a nonprofit basis to qualified professional and practical nurses without regard to race, creed, color, school of nursing or length of residence." It is, however, one thing to have a statement of principle written into the standards for operating registries and another to cope with the situations that confront the registrars. In some states they do have support in carrying out the principle because several of the state and local laws require a policy of nondiscrimination in securing information about registrants. The registries in these states may not, because of the law, record a person's birthplace, race, or religion, nor can they accept a photograph of the applicant. The registrar is prohibited from any action which will encourage or result in segregation or discrimination in employment.
