Symbolism in African Verbal Art

Abstract

Un grand nombre de contes traditionnels africains sont bien connus. Ils ont deja fait l'objet de nombreux recueils d'ethnologues. Le professeur Crowley en a rassembles d'autres au cours de ses voyages. Leurs origines et leur mode de transmission sont beaucoup moins connus et ont provoque des discussions interminables et sans conclusion. C'est la culture d'une communaute en particulier qui fournit la seule explication valable du symbolisme de sa litterature. Il serait faux de croire que l'on puisse aisement traduire les symboles des contes africains pour un public occidental. Or ce n'est que lorqu'ils deviennent universels que les symboles cessent d'etre esoteriques. Ils permettent alors a l'observateur d'apprecier une litterature qui n'etait pas la sienne. La these du professeur Crowley contribue a faire reconnaitre le conte africain comme faisant partie de l'heritage de la culture mondiale.
