The Aesthetics of Kin Recognition

Abstract

L'autonomie et le caractere special du savoir non-rationnel constituent une enigme de longue date en epistemologie. L'A. soutient qu'une variete bien decrite de savoir non-rationnel, la perception esthetique, est une elaboration culturelle de la faculte humaine universelle et non-rationnelle de la reconnaissance des liens de parente. De fait, la reconnaissance des liens de parente annonce les traits symptomatiques qui sont au centre de la perception esthetique, y compris le sens de la singularite des objets esthetiques, l'illusion de presence qui les accompagne et l'experience esthetique de transcendence du soi, ainsi que l'autonomie profonde du savoir non-rationnel. Cette interpretation, qui touche a la question plus generale de la selection de groupe versus un authentique altruisme chez les humains, est appliquee a l'analyse que fait Whitehouse du processus d'empreintage (imprinting) dans les rituels d'initiation.
