From a priori considerations a mathematical model is deduced to describe differences in fruit numbers per tree over a period of time using a log(log) transformation of the proportional reduction in fruit numbers. This model is applied to a well-replicated experiment and shown to give a good fit to the data with an absence of interaction between sites (blocks), rootstocks, and treatments. The application of various growth functions to the interpretation of the model is discussed.
