The impact of an insect in the orb web of Argiope aurantia elicits a complex sequence of predatory behavior which can be subdivided on a functional basis into four categories: prey location, prey immobilization, prey transportation and feeding. This paper de- scribes the more common predatory behavior patterns of a Central Texas population of this species. The behavioral elements and the order in which they occur are not always the same. Variation in predatory behavior is related to the level of activity of the entangled prey and to the type and size of the prey. Prey that is inactive or sporadically active elicits different locating be- havior than active prey. The strategy of prey immobilization and prey transportation is cued by the size and type of prey.
