IN MY BRIEF REPLY, I would like to deal first with criticism made in Henderson's "Comments: Consociational Democracy and the Case of Switzerland,' and then review the implications of recent modifications in the theory of consociational democracy for Switzerland. To begin with, Henderson unwittingly confirms my thesis in showing that Arend Lijphart has modified his earlier position that Switzerland is a contemporary example of consociational democracy. In an important work only generally available in university libraries after the submission of my article for publication, Lijphart argues that Switzerland is one of a number of European countries which ". . . reached their apogee of sharp plural divisions and close elite cooperation in the late 1950s and have been declining since then. 2 Henderson seems to feel that such was
