Abstract

D oEs a city's size' influence its sex ratio?2 This is the question posed by the present study. A logical hypothesis is that women prefer the big cities. It is likely that in these places, rather than in small communities, occupations such as clerical and sales work, trade, merchandising, communication, professional pursuits, etc.-in which women find their greatest opportunity for employment-are most strongly represented. In addition, such things as recreational facilities, luxuries, and comforts of various sorts are apt to occur in greatest abundance in large cities; it is conceivable that these items are selectively inviting to women. It should follow, accordingly, that large communities are numerically more feminized than smaller ones. Several generalizations on this matter have been advanced. McKenzie,3 Scheinfeld,4 Sorokin and Zimmerman,5 Weber,6 Sanderson,7 and Beegle8 contend that females form
