On Concepts and Conceptions

On Concepts and Conceptions

Abstract

There are a number of important themes in professor Higginbotham's paper. I will focus here on what I take to be the main topic of the paper: whether there is a distinction to be drawn between what he calls "possessing a concept" and "having an adequate conception of a concept" and what this alleged distinction amounts to. I will claim that professor Higginbotham's paper certainly succeeds in showing that there is room for drawing some distinction of the kind he indicates. I will also argue, though, that the paper is less successful in making it clear what exactly the distinction it intends to draw is. My paper can be seen as a way of providing several specific requests for clarification of the distinction.
