I threw on the fire a rotten log, not noticing that the inside of it was densely populated with ants. The log began to split open; the ants tumbled out and ran to and fro in desperation. They ran up and down the surface of the log, writhing as the flames consumed them. I took hold of the log and rolled it to the edge of the fire. Now many ants escaped-they ran onto the sand, onto the pine needles. But strangely enough, they didn't run away from the fire. Hardly had they overcome their terror when they turned back, ran around in circles and-some force drew them back, back to their abandoned native land! Many ran back up on the burning log, scurried around on it, and perished there.
