"Adieu, Mademoiselle Veronique" was written in Leningrad at Easter time, 1967. There was a Mlle. Ve'ronique in Brodsky's life; but this is not, or at least not primarily, a love poem. Rather, it is a Christian meditation on the theme of the Passion-an exploration of the nature and function of religious suffering. The poem is built around a sustained, and untranslatable, play on the Russian words kreslo ("armchair") and krest ("cross"). For example, Brodsky writes (in Stanza IX) that if
