CLARK, JANE E., and WATKINS, DEBRA L. Static Balance in Young Children. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1984, 55, 854-857. The purpose of this study was to describe the static balance ability of 6-9-year-old children. A 32-item test battery was administered to 154 subjects. The test battery represented all possible combinations of 4 task demands (body position, size of the base of support, availability of visual cues, and leg used for support) identified by task analysis as potential dimensions of static balance ability. Analysis of the results revealed that 3 of the 4 task demands (body position, base of support, and visual cues) significantly affected the 1-footed static balance performance of the children. Furthermore, as revealed by the complex interaction between the dimensions, static balance ability in young children would appear to be a complex multidimensional construct.
