FIVE COMMON CONCEPTS or megista gene-being, identity, difference, motion and rest-play a key role in the Sophistes.1 They are not an innovation. Allusion is made to them, and to similar concepts, in earlier dialogues. Already in the Phaedo (103E-105C) certain ideas having a mathematical character-equality, oddness, evenness-are recognized not as a special category but as functioning in special ways and having peculiar problems. It is in the Parmenides that we first encounter them as a grouping.2 There Parmenides introduces them as similar ideas
