Abstract

A mandioca constitui um bom modelo de analise e estudos sobre inter-relacoes entre sociedade, recursos fitogeneticos e condicoes ecologicas por ser uma planta amplamente cultivada por populacoes indigenas, mesticas e colonos, sendo representada por grande numero de variedades. A ligacao agricultor-variedade de mandioca e um sinonimo de ligacao forte entre ser humano-natureza. A compreensao deste laco e a chave para a conservacao de variedades locais, um importante tesouro para o futuro. Os principais detentores de materiais silvestres e variedades crioulas de mandioca na Amazonia sao as populacoes locais distribuidas nas diversas terras indigenas e os agricultores situados na terra firme e nas barrancas dos rios.
