En momentos en que la web ofrece una interminable cantidad de información y recursos valiosos para la educación, se debe tener presente que no todos los materiales que se encuentran en internet son de uso libre. La mayor parte está sujeta a derechos de autor y restricciones para su uso. Por ello, desde hace varios años se han estado implementando las licencias Creative Commons, que permiten utilizar de manera más flexible materiales como artículos e imágenes con sus beneficios y limitaciones,con lo cual, el autor puede definir los términos en que pueden ser utilizados sus trabajos, y en especial si podría ser modificado o utilizado, ya sea, con fines educativos o comerciales.
