Um músico brasileiro em Nova York: o Pan-Americanismo na obra de Heitor Villa-Lobos (1939-1945)

Abstract

Este artigo pretende analisar parte da construção do modernismo e do nacionalismo musicais de Heitor Villa Lobos (1887-1959) a partir do estudo dos seus diálogos com a cultura musical norte-americana no contexto dos anos 1940. Sua produção musical bem como a difusão desta nos Estados Unidos se apresenta como uma produção dinâmica e em constante diálogo com outros intelectuais: músicos, musicólogos, jornalistas, outros artistas. As partir de sua primeira viagem aos Estados Unidos, e ao tecer estas redes de sociabilidades naquele país, percebe-se que além da construção de um “pensamento social sobre o Brasil”, Villa-Lobos se apresentou dentro de uma “cultura intelectual” que consiste numa rede dinâmica e que se expressa por meio do compartilhar de práticas musicais e diálogos musicológicos. Estes tomam sentidos políticos e sociais a partir do estudo dos significados histórico-culturais das obras de Villa-Lobos e da difusão das mesmas nos periódicos norte-americanos e brasileiros.
