A lógica do modernismo

Abstract

A autora argumenta o quanto o formalismo greenbergiano, ao promover um divórcio entre a forma artística e o conteúdo social, constitui-se como uma incompreensão, verdadeira aberração, do formalismo europeu que sempre associou a forma inovadora com a crítica social. Mostra como as estratégias antiformalistas do minimalismo e, posteriormente, aquelas da arte conceitual, minaram a pretensão à pureza, reintroduzindo na arte a questão social. Salienta, todavia, como o formalismo vazio, que acometeu a arte norte-americana nos anos 50, foi útil às políticas reacionárias do senador McCarthy que perseguiu os intelectuais e os artistas de esquerda. Atualizando sua crítica, compara a política maccarthista à atual postura do governo norte-americano ao censurar as questões “politicamente sensíveis” na arte contemporânea.
