
La infección crónica provocada por el virus de la hepatitis C (VHC) sigue siendo un gran problema de salud pública a nivel mundial, afecta a unos 200 millones de personas en el mundo. Se trata de la primera primera causa de trasplante y de muerte de origen hepático. La evolución natural de la enfermedad es el desarrollo de cirrosis y el riesgo de desarrollo de hepatocarcinoma. Es una enfermedad silenciosa, cuyo diagnóstico mediante la clínica supone detectarla en fases avanzadas. El diagnóstico inicial se realiza mediante la detección de anticuerpos anti-VHC y se confirma demostrando la replicación viral. La indicación de tratamiento se establece tras la evaluación del grado de fibrosis y el genotipo de VHC que ha infectado al paciente.
