Abstract

O artigo discute os significados da aprovação e da implementação da política de cotas raciais nas universidades públicas brasileiras, a partir da perspectiva da ética da alteridade em Emmanuel Lévinas. Com base no julgamento do STF pela legitimidade das cotas e na Lei Federal nº 12.711, ambas ocorridas em 2012, o texto analisa os efeitos deste posicionamento e da promulgação da Lei para a dinâmica racial brasileira e para a educação das relações étnico-raciais. A revisão da literatura sobre o tema não deixa dúvidas de que a política de discriminação positiva foi um avanço no que se refere à garantia de direitos para a população afro-brasileira. Para além dessa perspectiva, a ética da alteridade mostra que quando novos encontros se estabelecem nas universidades, se potencializam relações transcendentes ao ser, provocando uma reviravolta ontológica. Deste modo, a política afirmativa tem proporcionado efeitos relevantes no âmbito social, tensionando o debate público e produzindo outras relações, necessárias para o desenvolvimento da equidade racial.
