PENGGUNAAN BIOBRIKET SEBAGAI BAHAN BAKAR ALTERNATIF DALAM PENGERINGAN KARET ALAM

Abstract

Biomassa merupakan sumber energi potensial yang dapat dikembangkan sebagai sumber energi alternatif pengganti bahan bakar dari fosil. Biomassa dapat diubah menjadi briket arang yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai sumber energi seperti untuk proses pengeringan dalam pengolahan karet remah dan sit asap. Briket arang biomassa atau biobriket dibuat dari arang biomassa baik berupa bagian yang memang sengaja dijadikan bahan baku briket maupun sisa atau limbah proses produksi/pengolahan agroindustri. Misalnya kayu, tempurung kelapa, arang tempurung kelapa sawit, limbah bambu, tandan buah kosong kelapa sawit, sekam padi, dan limbah batang tembakau dapat menjadi bahan baku untuk biobriket. Selain itu, limbah dari industri karet remah berupa tatal juga dapat dijadikan biobriket. Teknologi pembuatan biobriket banyak tersedia. Pembuatan biobriket memerlukan bahan penunjang seperti tanah liat, lem kanji, air, dan bahan pencampur lainnya. Komposisi bahan tersebut sangat tergantung dari jenis bahan baku untuk pembuatan biobriket. Sebelum dibuat biobriket, biomassa harus diubah terlebih dahulu menjadi arang, kemudian arang tersebut dihaluskan, dicampur dan dicetak dalam berbagai bentuk briket seperti silinder, kubus dan telur. Dari beberapa hasil penelitian, secara umum nilai kalor yang dihasilkan dari biobriket ternyata tidak berbeda nyata dibandingkan dengan briket batubara. Oleh karena itu, biobriket dapat digunakan sebagai bahan bakar proses pengeringan karet alam.
