Abstract

Las cianobacterias son microorganismos similares a las bacterias y se diferencian por que realizan fotosíntesis oxigénica, su incremento ocurre de manera natural, pero se ha magnificado en frecuencia e intensidad por la interferencia humana a partir de fuentes puntuales (descargas municipales, agricultura, malas prácticas de acuicultura), deficientes sistemas de tratamientos de aguas y la formación de diques de ríos, lo que aumenta el tiempo de retención y exposición del agua a la luz solar y naturales con el incremento de la temperatura. Presentan estrategias ante los cambios ambientales (geoquímicos y climáticos) por lo que habitan ambientes muy diversos, donde las poblaciones pueden ser dominadas por una única especie o estar compuestas por una variedad de ellas y algunas pueden ser tóxicas. El análisis microscópico no define la toxicidad, por lo que es importante hacer otros análisis. El potencial tóxico se evalúa mediante bioensayos controlados y análisis químicos en laboratorio donde los valores de algunas cianotoxinas, superan los 100 µg L-1 o más, poniendo en riesgo la salud humana-animal por el contacto, ingesta directa e indirecta, generando impacto ambiental y económico. Es necesario desarrollar procesos de evaluación y caracterización de riesgo, desarrollo de políticas y acciones de gestión (niveles de alerta).
