Empathie und die Big Five

Empathy and the Big Five
Authors: Paulus, Christoph;

Empathie und die Big Five

Abstract

(2004) have tried more than 10 years ago to show the correlation between empathy and the Big Five. In her study, women scored higher in empathy and the Big Five factors with the exception of neuroticism. Correlations to empathy were found in openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness and extraversion. In our sample women had significantly higher values in empathy as well as the Big Five, although the effect sizes are rather low for extraversion and agreeableness. The strongest correlation is found between empathy and agreeableness. Therefore our data can confirm the thesis that empathy is a strong element for the quality of interpersonal behaviour. Critical to be seen is the BFI-10 scale itself while reliability and validity scores could not be replicated.
