Abstract

Agricultural and livestock activities provide food, economic and social functions of crucial importance for human development, but they also deteriorate soils, water and biodiversity, and contribute to climate change by greenhouse gases (GHG) produced at different stages of the production chain. In Mexico, livestock activities occupy more than half of the territory, so it is important to measure and monitor the emissions of this sector. Gas chromatography is a useful tool for quantifying GHG emissions. The focus of this work is on showing the importance of this tool in the determination of GHG emissions in different stages of livestock production. The use of GC in emissions studies can reduce the uncertainty by improving emission factors in the livestock sector. The implementation of this methodology requires the formation of working groups that contribute to strengthening skills, obtaining funds to improve the infrastructure of laboratories, and constructing synergy between academic, private and governmental groups.
