FAMILIA PIPERACEAE

Abstract

Según estudios recientes, las Piperaceae contienen aproximadamente 3600 especies agrupadas en cinco géneros y tres subfamilias: Verhuellioideae (Verhuellia), Zippelioideae (Zippelia y Manekia) y Piperoideae (Piper y Peperomia) (Samain et al., 2008). Los representantes de la familia crecen en todas las zonas tropicales y subtropicales del mundo. Dentro del género Piper existen plantas de importancia económica o de uso importante, como Piper nigrum L. (“pimiento”), P. amalago L. (“higuillo de limón”), P. betle L. (“betel”), P. auritum Kunth (“hoja santa”) y P. methysticum L.f. (“kava”). Más de 100 especies de Peperomia se comercializan por su valor ornamental, p. ej. P. caperata Yunck., P. argyreia (Miq.) Morr., P. fraseri C. DC. y P. obtusifolia (L.) A. Dietr. En México se usan diferentes especies de Peperomia en la medicina tradicional o como sazonador de alimentos. En México la familia solo está representada por Piperoideae, con Piper y Peperomia, los dos se registran en la zona de estudio.
