
La familia comprende 13 a 16 géneros y unas 400 especies de plantas de regiones templadas y zonas intertropicales montañosas, principalmente del Hemisferio Norte, algunas extendiéndose hasta Sudamérica, Australia y Nueva Zelanda. Muchas caprifoliáceas se cultivan como ornamentales en jardines de regiones de clima fresco por sus flores y frutos vistosos. Actualmente se considera que la familia en el sentido tradicional no forma un grupo monofilético; para esta contribución se considera a Caprifoliaceae sensu stricto. Para la región de estudio se reconocen tres géneros con cinco especies.
