FAMILIA BLECHNACEAE

Abstract

La familia Blechnaceae está constituida por nueve géneros y aproximadamente 175 especies. Se distribuye extensamente en el mundo y se puede encontrar en un amplio intervalo de hábitats; sin embargo, raramente se presenta en climas secos; por lo general son plantas de hábito terrestre. Es una familia aislada y sus relaciones con otros helechos no son claras. Sus características distintivas son los soros alargados ubicados a lo largo de ambos lados de las costas y no hacia los márgenes. En México se encuentran los géneros Blechnum y Woodwardia, los cuales están representados en la zona de estudio. Las especies de Blechnum con hojas monomórficas hibridizan con frecuencia y los individuos originados por cruzamiento a veces llegan a ser localmente abundantes, pues se propagan por estolones. A diferencia de muchos otros helechos, en este género es difícil detectar a los híbridos mediante las características de las esporas, ya que éstas no siempre son o muestran ser abortivas. Las esporas son casi incoloras y las abortivas no se colapsan ni se tornan obscuras. Por otro lado, Woodwardia se encuentra distribuido en el Hemisferio Norte y en las regiones intertropicales habita en altas elevaciones. Está compuesto por 13 especies; de México se conocen sólo tres. Woodwardia es afín a Blechnum, pero se diferencia de este último por la presencia de soros interrumpidos en la costa.
