FAMILIA JUGLANDACEAE

Abstract

Familia con siete a ocho géneros con alrededor de 60 especies distribuidas principalmente en las regiones templadas del Hemisferio Norte, unas pocas se presentan en Sudamérica y en algunas islas del Pacífico. En el área de la presente Flora se han registrado dos géneros y cuatro especies. Por diversas razones, algunas de las especies de la familia Juglandaceae son importantes desde el punto de vista económico; la madera de los árboles es muy bien valorada, empleándose particularmente en el recubrimiento de muebles y de algunos instrumentos musicales, las nueces de varios representantes son comestibles y ampliamente utilizadas en confitería, mientras que la envoltura de los frutos de otras se utiliza como fuente de taninos y colorantes; también son bien valoradas como plantas ornamentales. Por lo anterior, varias especies se cultivan ampliamente.
