
Familia con seis géneros y alrededor de 100 especies, distribuidas principalmente en las regiones templadas septentrionales y en zonas montañosas tropicales. Algunas son de interés económico: de Betula se obtiene madera aserrada y aceites aromatizantes; las semillas producidas por varias especies de Corylus son comestibles (“avellanas”); en algunos lugares se elabora carbón de la madera de Alnus y Betula, mientras que la de Carpinus y Ostrya es apreciada por su dureza; la corteza, hojas o frutos de ciertas especies de Ostrya y Alnus, se utilizan como medicinales. En la zona de estudio se encuentran tres géneros.
