Abstract

La familia incluye ocho géneros y unas 300 especies, habitantes sobre todo de regiones templadas y frías, seis de estos géneros se encuentran limitados en su distribución a Sudamérica. Para la familia se han propuesto varios centros de origen: las montañas de Eurasia, trópicos del Viejo Mundo y su distribución hacia el norte a partir de la Antártida. En México están representados dos géneros (Juncus y Luzula), las plantas de esta familia son muchas veces conocidas como "juncos"; tienen valor forrajero, sin embargo, son de poca importancia económica y se tiene escasa información con relación a sus usos. Fuera del país se cita su utilización en la elaboración de tapetes, petates, sombreros, asientos de sillas y la médula de los tallos se emplea para la producción de pabilos.
