
La familia está formada por 7 a 17 géneros y aproximadamente 170 especies distribuidas principalmente en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales de ambos hemisferios. Aunque alcanza su mayor desarrollo en el Hemisferio Sur; se extiende hacia el norte hasta China, Japón, México, Centroamérica y el Caribe. En México sólo está representada por el género Podocarpus. Los integrantes de la familia Podocarpaceae tienen poca importancia económica, aunque algunos miembros de los géneros Dacrydium y Podocarpus producen madera valiosa y a veces se plantan como ornamentales.
