
Las Acanthaceae comprenden más de 4000 especies de unos 230 géneros ampliamente distribuidos en el mundo. En su mayoría crecen en las porciones tropicales y subtropicales, con sus principales centros de diversidad en las regiones indo-malesiana, africana (incluyendo Madagascar), sudamericana y mexicano-centroamericana. Ocupan casi todos los habitats intertropicales con excepción de los de alta montaña (por encima de 3000 metros). Para nuestra área se reconocen 61 especies de 18 géneros.
