Abstract

Familia con tres a cinco géneros y unas 15 especies; distribuida en el Hemisferio Norte y en Nueva Caledonia. En México sólo se registra la existencia del género Taxus. Varios representantes de esta familia han sido usados tradicionalmente como plantas de ornato y en Europa la madera de Taxus se emplea desde tiempos remotos en la ebanistería. Género compuesto por 7 a 10 especies ampliamente distribuidas en las regiones templadas del Hemisferio Norte, cuatro en Norteamérica. Las hojas y la semilla de algunas especies de Taxus son venenosas al hombre y al ganado, por la presencia de un alcaloide llamado taxina; la madera es rica en taninos. En América no tienen importancia económica destacada, pero en Europa las plantas de este género fueron usadas en la medicina tradicional como abortivas y emenagogas, las variedades hortícolas de Taxus baccata L. se han cultivado ampliamente en parques y jardines, la madera se emplea en la construcción de muebles y en la fabricación de arcos por su flexibilidad. En México sólo se conoce una especie hasta el momento: Taxus globosa conocida comúnmente como granadillo, palmira, romerillo, tlatscal; se emplea como ornamental, maderable, curtiente y para elaborar carbón.
