In the modern era of applied sciences, the principles of Acharya Sushruta, the Father of Surgery, are essential for understanding the prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases. According to Ayurvedic science, the Chikitsa Sutra (line of treatment) includes both medical and surgical interventions. Acharya Sushruta had extensive clinical knowledge regarding neurological, metabolic, autoimmune, respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal diseases. He mentioned all the necessary surgical procedures required for disease management. In the case of Gridhrasi (Sciatica), Sushruta has explained surgical management such as Antra Kandaragulphaya Basti Karana as an essential feature of treatment. Similarly, in the context of Siragata Vata (Varicose Veins), the procedure of Raktamokshana (bloodletting) is considered highly beneficial for prominent veins. Raktamokshana is also mentioned in the management of Shirashoola (Headache) and Kushtha Roga (skin disorders) for purification of blood and better prognosis.
