The heritage of the Bulgarian revival in the central Balkans region: Vernacular architecture - restoration issues and revitalization challenges

Abstract

Abstract. Over the past century, the concept of "obsolescence" has gained prominence, highlighting the ephemeral nature of architecture. The rapid advancement of building systems and technologies has accelerated the depreciation and aging of structures, prompting a shift in our understanding of a building's "lifespan." However, with evolving mindsets, it is essential to reconsider the value of vernacular buildings even not classified as Immovable Cultural Heritage. Some can be saved and revitalized, offering significant meaning for future development while preserving the cultural identity of cities and their inhabitants, as well as the layered historical memory they represent.
