RISC SYSTEM/6000 computers are workstations with a reduced instruction set processor recently developed by IBM. This report details the performance of the 6000-series computers as measured using a set of portable, standard-Fortran, computationally-intensive benchmark codes that represent the the scientific workload at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The performance of the RISC SYSTEM/6000 machines is compared with corresponding data from a Sun-4/330, a Digital Equipment Corporation DECstation 3100, a single processor of a Convex C-240, a single-processor FPS-500, and a single processor of a CRAY Y-MP8/832. 22 refs., 11 tabs.
