Pilot-plant studies of the HFRL process for the recovery of uranium from refractory residues were continued. The HFRL process consists of an initial and final hydrofluorination at 600 deg C for a total time of 4 hr, and an interim H/ sub 2/ reduction at 6OO deg C for 2 hr; the resulting residue is leached twice with a HNO/sub 3/--Al(NO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ solution and a third time with HNO/sub 3/ alone. Recovery values of 95 to 98% were obtained. (C.W.H.)
