Among the late effects of poliomyelitis is the PostPolio Syndrome (PPS), characterized by increased musclestrength loss, abnormal fatigue and pain after a period ofstability of at least 15 years. The incidence and prevalence ofPPS are unknown in the world and in Brazil, depending on thediagnostic criteria. The diagnosis of PPS is made by exclusionand there is no specific laboratory test, these only help to ruleout other diseases. There is no curative treatment for PPS. Itsetiology remains unknown. Strategies for their clinicalmanagement aim reducing muscle overusing and a balanceactive lifestyle is recommended to minimize the symptoms.
