Abstract

ALESSANDRO MINELLI Istituto di Biologia Animale dell’Universit:?1 - Padova Riflessioni su11’endemismo e la vicarianza nel regno animale Ne11’affrontare il tema dell’endemismo e della vicarianza geo- grafica dobbiamo metterci subito d’accordo su di un punto: Che cosa possiamo chiedere alla biogeografia? Dobbiamo limitare il suo arnbito alla descrizione degli areali attuali ed a1l’interpretazione storica della Ioro origine o possiamo cercare di fame anche una scienza di previsione? ' Questa seconda alternativa, che fino a pochi anni fa sarebbe generalmente sembrata assurda, nonostante le implicite prernesse contenute in opere come la Tiergeograp/Jie auf ekologisc/yer Grund- lczge di HES SE (1924) e stata di recente avanzata da alcuni studiosi [cfr. ad esempio MACARTHUR e WILSON (1967) e MACARTHUR (1972)] ed E: a mic avviso degna di molta considerazione. Una scelta, comunque, pub avvenire solo quando si siano defi- niti i termini del discorso e si siano esaminate alcune situazioni-tipo. 1. Qualche definizione: endemismo. Endemismo e la condizione di un taxon il cui areale sia limi- tato ad un territorio geograficamente (fisiograficarnente) pi1‘.1 o me- no distinto e circoscritto. Un taxon endemico, tuttavia, pub avere vario rango gerarchico e do e rilevante per il nostro discorso.
