It is stressed that quantitative biogeog— raphy should not be considered as the mere application of numerical methods. Some examples of applica- tion of integrated information systems composed of data bases and programs for multivariate analysis, using both mainframes and microcomputers, are given. INTRODUZIONE: COS’E LA BIOGEOGRAFIA QUANTITATIVA La diffusione di un tipo di organismo vivente dipende dalla estensione dell’ambiente che gli consente la vita e dalla sua capacita di diffondersi ed adattarsi. Lo stesso vale per una comunita vegetale, animale ed umana. An- che senza pensare alla comunita in termini organicistici, possiamo dire che ad ogni tipo di organismo e di comunita corrisponde una nicchia ecologica, cioe una porzione dello spazio ecologico che viene definito dai fattori che control- lano tutte le attivita biologiche (si Veda Hurlbert 1981, per una approfondita discussione sulla nicchia ecologica). Questa porzione di spazio, che include appunto l’insieme dei punti con condizioni possibilj per l’organismo o la comunita, pub realizzarsi su vaste aree o su piccole aree della Terra,_ il tutto dipende da una moltitudine di fatti generali o locali legati alla storia chimi- co—fisica e morfologica del nostro pianeta. Se una nicchia occupa certe aree non e detto che il tipo di organismo o la comunita corrispondenti occupino automaticarnente le stesse aree. In questi termini la biogeografia potrebbe essere definita come quella disciplina scientifica che cerca di spiegare le rela- zioni tra la effettiva distribuzione geografica di un tipo di organismo, 0 di comunita e la distribuzione geografica della nicchia corrispondente. A questa definizione si puo associate una lunga lista di domande: —— Quando due 0 pin tipi di organismi, diversi per certi caratteri, si posso- no considerate equivalenti rispetto ad una nicchia? Od anche, quanto differenti devono essere due entita per coesistere nella stessa comunita occupando la stessa nicchia 0 nicchie diverse? — Quali sono le relazioni filogenetiche e/o evolutive tra organismi e/o co- munita che occupano le medesimenicchie, o nicchie molto simili? 49
