Reduced relative biomass and contrasting exploitation status of blue runner (Caranx crysos) and crevalle jack (Caranx hippos) in artisanal gillnet fisheries of the Colombian Caribbean

Abstract

Blue runner (Caranx crysos) and crevalle jack (Caranx hippos) are important components of artisanal fisheries in the Colombian Caribbean, yet information on their population status remains limited. This study estimated growth, mortality, selectivity, and exploitation parameters for both species using length-frequency data collected by the Colombian Fisheries Statistical Service (SEPEC) between 2021 and 2023. Growth parameters were estimated with ELEFAN, whereas mortality and exploitation rates were derived from length-converted catch curves and empirical estimators of natural mortality. Stock status was assessed through Beverton and Holt relative yield-per-recruit (Y′/R) and biomass-per-recruit (B′/R) analyses implemented in TropFishR. Estimated exploitation rates were 0.54 for C. crysos and 0.62 for C. hippos. Yield-per-recruit analyses revealed contrasting exploitation patterns between species. Although the current exploitation level of C. crysos remained below conventional biological reference points, relative biomass per recruit declined to less than 26% of the unfished level. In contrast, C. hippos exceeded both E0.1 and Emax, while B′/R decreased to approximately 20% of the unfished biomass. These results indicate substantial reductions in biomass per recruit for both species, with a more critical condition for C. hippos. The findings highlight the need for precautionary management measures to reduce the capture of immature individuals and safeguard the reproductive capacity of these exploited populations.
