<p><span>Education reform has historically focused on curriculum, instructional practice, and accountability systems used to measure academic performance. While these approaches have generated valuable insights into teaching and learning, they often overlook the upstream conditions that regulate learning itself. Students and educators do not engage in learning within neutral environments; rather, they operate within complex social, emotional, physiological, and institutional contexts that shape their capacity to sustain intellectual engagement. When system conditions across layers are unstable, instructional improvement alone cannot consistently produce positive outcomes.</span></p> <p><span>This article introduces Educational Architecture, a conceptual framework proposing that learning outcomes emerge from the alignment of system conditions across layers within educational systems. These conditions are organized across four interacting domains: distributed ecosystem conditions, governance structures, adult regulatory capacity, and student capacity conditions. Together, these ideas are articulated through the Human Conditions Theory of Education, which conceptualizes learning environments as layered systems whose stability regulates the capacity for sustained intellectual engagement. Drawing on ecological systems theory, motivation theory, and organizational research on institutional coherence, the article argues that learning environments must be understood as human systems whose effectiveness depends on the alignment of system conditions across layers.</span></p> <p><span>Within the student layer, readiness for learning is further specified through the Five Wells Framework, which describes five domains influencing students’ capacity to engage in sustained academic work: physical, emotional, environmental, relational, and cognitive conditions.</span></p> <p><span>The article introduces four conceptual contributions to educational scholarship:</span></p> <p><span>1. Human Conditions Theory of Education — a theoretical framework for examining the environmental foundations of learning systems </span></p> <p><span>2. Educational Architecture — a systems model describing how system conditions interact across institutional layers </span></p> <p><span>3. The Five Wells Framework — a model describing domains of student capacity that influence sustained learning engagement </span></p> <p><span>4. A dual-measurement system consisting of:</span></p> <p><span> - The Human Conditions Index (HCI), which assesses the stability of environmental conditions influencing learning </span></p> <p><span> - The Coherence Index (CI), which evaluates the alignment of system conditions across layers </span></p> <p><span>Together, these contributions establish a multidimensional framework for understanding, measuring, and designing learning environments capable of sustaining intellectual engagement over time.</span></p>
