The field of leadership-as-practice (L-A-P) has evolved in parallel with strategy-as-practice and was highlighted in 2016 with an edited volume by Joseph Raelin under the title: Leadership-as-Practice: Theory and Application. Like SAP, it was formed as an alternative perspective, in its case versus standard conceptions of leadership, which relied upon the attributes of individuals and, in particular, upon the historic relationship between leaders and followers. In L-A-P, practice becomes the site for leadership rather than located in individuals and their traits and behaviors. In particular, leadership occurs when there is a turning point or change in trajectory in the flow of practice accomplished by all the interconnected parties who come together to engage in a mutual endeavor. In a L-A-P world, to find and change leadership, we must look to the practice within which it is occurring.
